Ride That Rhythm, Like a Merry-go-round

Remember those schoolyard merry-go-rounds we played on as kids? If the merry-go-round was moving and you wanted to get on it, what did you do? You probably ran alongside until you judged the time was right for you to jump on. Similarly, if you want to throw a bowling ball, you prepare in rhythm: step, step, step, toss.

In both these examples, it helps to initiate the main movement of leaping or throwing by setting up the rhythm ahead of time. We can—and should—do the same thing when singing. I call this RIDING THE RHYTHM. This means truly feeling the rhythm (as established by the conductor!) in your body before you begin singing and throughout the piece.  If you can do this, you will get a better breath and you’re more likely to be on time with your entrances.

A great way to practice your music at home is to sing while moving (conduct the music, or walk in rhythm). This will show you how much breath you need, and where you’re not ready for the next phrase because you’ve lost the rhythm and collapsed. As singers, we have to stay lifted in our bodies and ready to move, like ballroom dancers, even when we aren’t singing.

We can’t move so extravagantly in rehearsals or performances, but we have to find a way to connect with the rhythm and let it support us. Tap a heel, a toe, a finger, and mentally prepare just as if you were about to take a leap—which you are!
