PPM’s 30th Anniversary Christmas Concert
Portsmouth Pro Musica greets the Seacoast’s holiday season with “A 30th Birthday Christmas” choral concert performances of Vivaldi’s joyous Magnificat, with chamber orchestra and J.S. Bach’s Cantata #140, also known as “Sleepers Wake.” As a special birthday collaboration, members of “Sandpipers,” Seacoast Children’s Chorus will join the chorus to present several holiday selections. Sandpipers is a Portsmouth-based auditioned treble chorus program for boys and girls ages 7-15.
The program will also include two sublime motets to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Alma Redemptoris Mater by Palestrina and Ave Maria by Rachmaninoff. Seasonal music includes the familiar Night of Silence and haunting Moon of Wintertime and two rollicking arrangements by John Rutter of The Twelve Days of Christmas and Jingle Bells. PPM’s signature a cappella ensemble, The Overtones, will also perform songs of the season at the start of second half of the program.
Artistic Director Priscilla Stevens French conducts the 56 voice mixed chorus, accompanied by organist Robert Littlefield. In the now 30 year tradition of Portsmouth Pro Musica, audience members are invited to join the chorus for the popular Carol-sing at the close of the concert.
