Christmas with Portsmouth Pro Musica & The Sandpipers

Posted: November 7, 2017 at 11:22 am   /   by   /   comments (8)

You are invited to a memorable Portsmouth Pro Musica performance of Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols featuring Sandpipers Children’s Choir and Sorana Scarlat on harp as our special guests! PPM and the Sandpipers will each sing their own seasonal selections. Also featured in this concert is Portsmouth Pro Musica’s a cappella ambassadors, The Overtones will sing a few jolly tunes to get us into the jolly spirit. It promises to be a fun and joyful concert that you won’t want to miss!

A few notes on Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols. During World War II, Britten returned home to England from the U.S. via Nova Scotia. In a bookstore in Halifax, he found a book of medieval poems which inspired the writing of a carol sequence. The opening and closing plainchant were added once he returned to England. Biographer Humphrey Carpenter likens A Ceremony of Carols to a “ceremony of innocence” about Britten’s boyhood. The work was originally written for a boys choir but has been arranged for different voices, as you are about to hear.
