We Remember Carl Eric Johnson

Posted: June 11, 2015 at 11:18 am   /   by   /   comments (4)

It is with a heavy heart that we share very sad news.  On Wednesday, June 10th, Portsmouth Pro Musica’s Carl Eric Johnson passed away peacefully at Exeter Hospital surrounded by loved ones.  Carl was a good friend to PPM, lending his wit, talent and expertise to our group singing both tenor and baritone.  Carl first joined PPM in 2010 for the 25th anniversary concert “Carmina Burana” and most recently performed in our Elijah concerts in April, 2014.

Carl was the owner of Carl Eric Johnson, Inc., a website development and consulting company.  In that capacity, Carl was also instrumental in developing PPM’s presence on the web, having launched the PPM website several years ago, and, in his position as webmaster, he actively lent his talents to always making the site better.  His support and expertise in that area will be hard to replace.

In the past few years, he was also a wonderful addition to the Overtones, PPM’s a cappella group singing both tenor and baritone and adding wonderful depth to the group.  Carl’s beautiful voice, his wit and his generous spirit will be greatly missed.

Here is a video of Carl performing the final movement of Elijah with PPM, And Then Shall Your Light Break Forth, at the South Church, Portsmouth on April, 2014.  You are welcome to share your thoughts or favorite memories of Carl in the comments below.

Carl and I were texting a few days ago. The last word I received from him was “Yum!” We all shared many yummy moments with Carl listening to his delicious voice, laughing to his quick and clever sense of humor, and toasting to exotic beverages and entrees. I have adopted a new toast in Carl’s honor – “Yum!”

I have fond memories of Carl from PPM, but most fondly, the Overtones. His quick wit and sass was the highlight of many musical experiences for me. My heart is heavy knowing that since I’ve moved, I haven’t talked with him as much. But, I remain happy knowing that he has gone home with God, and will be sassing his way through heaven. I will miss you, friend…you have touched mine and so many hearts in a way you could never know.

Carl was an important member of PPM since 2010. I will always be grateful for his voice, his spirit and dedication to making the best music possible. Carl also launched our website – today, the #1 tool for
PPM communication. He will be very much missed –

Carl was the first person I remember meeting when I joined PPM. I was fortunate to sit next to him at rehearsal and listen to his musical skills as he helped me learn the music. I could always count on him to get the right note. We have lost a talented singer and a wonderful person.
